10 Reasons Why People Don’t Want to Learn More

December 22, 2011 Vic Leave a Comment

I love to share knowledge, wisdom, insight and anything that I believe will enlighten anyone. This is also the reason why I started blogging and being active in the social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. In my life as a writer, teacher, blogger and a preacher, I have observed some of the top reasons why people are not interested to listen, read and learn. You might find it important to be aware of these reasons to reflect on yourself and get rid of the things that hinder you to learn further. Here are 10 reasons why people don’t want to intensify their knowledge.

1. They think they know everything

People who think that they don’t need to learn more will not care to learn further. This is because their minds are already closed to study and learn new things. They don’t want to let go of their old knowledge and fill in new one. Pride is one major reason why people behave like that. If you want to increase your knowledge and wisdom, the first step is to humble yourself and admit that you still have a lot of things to learn.

2. They aren’t ready yet to handle new knowledge

Preparedness is vital to handling anything new, including knowledge, wisdom, insight and understanding. There are people who don’t want to learn more because they are afraid to handle the truth. The desire to learn is there but the fear of responsibility is missing. If you want to learn more you should be ready to manage new things, whether you like it or not.

3. They don’t know where to start

Learning is a process. Hence, anyone who wants to succeed should know where to start. Some people don’t want to look for new learning because they just don’t know where to begin and where to search those learning. But if you really want to be more knowledgeable and be smarter, the key is to find for righteous mentors. They are the people who have already walked through the path of knowledge. What you need to do is just to follow their steps.

4. New learning means additional work to do

Laziness is one of the top reasons why people can’t learn more. New lessons don’t only mean new things to fill in our minds, but they are also new activities to practice. That is why there are many of us who choose to escape reading a book or listening to our mentors even if we already know that we can learn new and useful lessons in life. There are some who don’t want to learn skills, like driving or cooking, to avoid the additional workload. Of course if you know how to cook, you might be requested to cook for someone. But if you really wish to learn more knowledge and skills, be diligent and face the new jobs to be done.

5. They don’t want to go outside of their comfort zone

Learning means exploring new environment. If you are already comfortable with what you are and what you have now, it’s quite difficult to jump into a strange environment. There’s a great risk in trying new things that we are uncertain of, especially if it would require sacrificing the things that you have now. But there are also people who can take those risks just to fill out their never-ending curiosity. So if you want to be wiser, calculate the risk, then if it’s manageable… challenge and overcome it.

6. They don’t have enough time

The lack of time is a common reason for everyone to refrain from studying, observing, experimenting and learning new things. The truth is… knowledge and wisdom are almost everywhere. They are scattered on the streets, on the Internet, and anywhere else. But people who give their full time to their routine jobs may find it difficult to spare some time to discover new information and lessons. In other words, they are just too busy to learn more. If you are really serious to increase your knowledge, you should know your priority and know the things that will benefit you in the long run.

7. They have so much time

If lack of time can be one of the reasons why people don’t want to learn, having too much of it can also be a reason. This can actually be translated to procrastination. Without the pressure of time, most people don’t take the first step to acquiring new knowledge. What can I say to procrastinators is… don’t waste your precious time for nothing!

8. Learning isn’t fun

If learning has no twist that will make it exciting, the result would be a total boredom. One of the reasons why most people don’t pursue further learning is the lack of enthusiasm and excitement. Learning is usually not fun, especially that it needs patience and persistence to succeed. But it’s still your responsibility to add some fun on your process of learning. Be creative and be motivated during your study. You can try rewarding yourself with a gift every time you advance some steps in your stages of learning.

9. Exhausted brain

Our minds maybe infinite but our brains cells are not. People may become tired of continuous learning, especially if they are trying to absorb complex knowledge – actually, all things we don’t know are just complicated. A person who failed in his attempts to achieve new skills or knowledge may not continue to try again. But when important skills and knowledge are to be acquired, we should not stop from trying until we attain success. The key here is to take a break. And when you recover, try and try again until you succeed.

10. They don’t personally like the teacher

Whether it’s a person, an event or something, when people personally don’t like it, their minds are too tight for a new teaching and realization to accommodate. Don’t expect that your enemies will listen to you when you preach to them. Also, when you don’t have a higher educational degree, chances are some people, especially those who have it, will not listen and expect to learn from you. But some of the great lessons in life are not taught by our allies or by some people who have finished a PhD degree. Even dogs can teach you how to be patient and babies can make you realize how gentleness works. Therefore, if you want to learn deeper, don’t look upon their diplomas, age or physical appearance… just look directly at the lessons they share.

So how about you? Which among the reasons above are stopping you from learning further?
