Are you a new employee or one of the employees who are not getting promotion? If you are one of those employees who never get promoted, you should try to assess yourself. Pay attention to your officemates who always gets a nod from your boss. What are the things that he or she usually does? Getting a promotion is not achieved in an instant. It relies on your daily activities. Small things counts too, you know?
So you won’t have to spy too much on your officemate and you will not be suspected of snooping or something, just read this 10 tips so you too can impress your boss in your workplace.
1. Be professional
Don’t take things personally, if there may be times that people express a negative about a project you are working on or for some inevitable reason your project did not went well as planned, don’t be disheartened. Instead, take it as a lesson and make sure that it won’t happen again.
2. Dress accordingly
Dressing up has a lot to say about your personality so you should be careful in choosing the clothes you want to wear to the office, specially the ladies. People with proper grooming are easily noticed, girls who dress up properly are more respected than those who wear revealing clothes and women on the other hand trust guys who looks clean. It is not just about getting a promotion, it is also about having a good relationship with the people you work with everyday.
3. Keep your work place clean
Are you one of those employees with much paperwork to do? Are you one of those people with papers piling up on your desk? It may look that you’re a busy person with a lot of things to finish but some people might think that you have been slacking around that is why your paper works have piled up or that you are too lazy to organize your things on your desk.
Why not start tidying up today? Clean up your desk everyday so that you will have more space to use and you can work much comfortably if your things are not cluttered. Use a filing cabinet or a filer you can put next to your desk so you can easily reach those documents whenever you need them, or to make things easier, have those important papers scanned and keep them in a filing cabinet. It would be easier for you to access those papers if they are just a click away. And of course, take a few minutes to dust off your desk in the morning and clean up your working area before going home.
I know it’s the job of a janitor or maintenance crew but if your colleagues would see you doing those small things then they would be impressed and eventually your boss too would hear about it.
4. Always come in early
As I have mentioned in my previous article on 10 career tips for women at work, successful people are early risers. If you wake up early you will still have a few minutes to spare which you could use for exercising. Now I’m not talking about a full 30 minute or an hour of exercise. What I am saying is if you have enough time you could still do a little stretching or maybe walking to revitalize your body and mind. And because you wake up early you can be at your office early too. If your time in is 9 in the morning it would be better if you arrive as early as 8:45 AM and if everyone wants to leave at exactly 5:00 PM and you still have more things to do, it would not hurt if you spend another 30 minutes in the office right?
I remember my former boss complained about a new employee who was just waiting for 5:00 PM so she could go home. Sure it would impress your boss if you could finish your task that day before the end of your shift but maybe it would impress him or her better if you would start with a new task right after you are done with one. In doing so, you will give your boss the impression that you are interested in growing with the company.
5. Volunteer to do some tasks that not everyone knows how to
As I have mentioned earlier, small things count. So it’s those little things that not everyone knows how to do that can give you the attention you need from your boss to notice you, like fixing a paper jammed printer that everyone uses or a few tricks with the computer.
You do not have to be an IT expert to do those things. There are actually tips on how to fix small computer glitches that you could find in the internet which you could apply in your office.
6. Be updated
In a fast paced world we live in it would be best to be up to date if you want to be ahead of everyone. And the best way to be updated is to read. I’m not talking about novels or entertainment magazines. Read about books or articles that are related to the industry you are in. You can do this at home before dozing off or even at work during lunch breaks.
7. Voice out your opinion in a proper manner
Most people would want their voices be heard by the company or their boss to the extent of organizing a rally. Things should not be that way, if you have some issues with the company or with anyone in the company, you should do it according to your company’s policy.
If your are given the chance to have a one-on-one talk with your boss, state your opinion if he asks you too, it would be a great way to build a healthy relationship with him or her. If you do not agree with how your boss runs things in the office, just tell him or her in a nice manner. Voicing out your opinion does not mean that it would instantly be imposed, be grateful that you are given a chance but do not expect that it would instantly be put into action.
8. Be ready at all times
If you are always ready to take on any task given to you by your boss then you have a good chance at getting that promotion you want. Know all the twist and turns of the industry you are in so you would always know what to do.
9. Use your initiative
If you know what you want then you should do what it takes to achieve it. If you are aiming for a promotion then you should do what is necessary to achieve that goal. Grab every opportunity you get to show that you are ready and able to handle things that others would shy away from.
10. Think Positive
Life is hard. Things will not always be easy breezy but you have to move on from every failure and start anew. Successful people did not know the exact formula in achieving what they have now but what separates them from others is that they have perseverance. They would not stop at nothing. And if your boss sees this quality in you then he or she would surely trust you to hold a higher position in the company.
Set your eyes on a goal and the best way to achieve that is by impressing your boss because he or she has the power to grant that promotion. I hope this article
