Wisdom can be found anywhere. You may found it in unexpected places or learned it from surprising people. We can even get business wisdom from the new born babies. Yes, from the cute little human beings, who don’t even know how to walk and how to talk.
I always find joy in staring at the cute and innocent faces of babies and in watching their actions and behaviors. They are so pure and their thoughts are free from corruption. Their purity and gentleness give us important lessons that we can apply on our small businesses. Here are 10 simple yet powerful small business tips we can learn from babies.
1. Just do it!
Babies do what they want as long as they can. Their innocent brains don’t overanalyze things. In running a business, there are many things that don’t require a lot of thinking to be decided and started. These things include giving your customers what they have paid for, paying your employees what they have worked for, and ensuring that they will be happy and satisfied with your business. Hence, if you want to succeed on your business, don’t hesitate to ensure quality on your service. Just do it!
2. Be harmless.
One of the most fascinating lessons that I’ve learned from babies is their natural ability to use their gentleness to survive. They can use their little cries to be fed and they can use their cuteness to get people’s attention. They can survive and succeed without using strong force.
Being gentle is vital in leadership and in human resource management. Leaders and managers need to be sharp, but they should also learn how to seal that sharpness in gentleness. Remember that the more we force people, the more they tend to disagree. We can be like the babies who can encourage adults to follow them on their own. Why do adults follow babies? Simply because babies are harmless – they don’t deserve to be forsaken.
We should also be harmless with our customers by ensuring quality on the products we deliver. We can also be harmless to our environment by ensuring that our business is nature-friendly. Harmlessness is simply an important key to lasting business success.
3. Smile and make people smile.
Babies are born to smile. They will smile at you regardless of whether you are poor or rich, and whether you are a popular person or just an ordinary citizen. In dealing with people in our business, we need to keep cheerfulness in ourselves. We need to smile and send positive vibes to our customers and to the people in our workplace. We should do it without favoritism because everyone deserves a smile. Hence, learn from the babies and know how to always wear a smile.
4. Give trust and be loyal.
A baby is loyal to his mother, who carried him in her womb and nurtures him every day and every night. Babies also need to trust people who carry them in their arms. Trust and loyalty are important in business. We need our consumers to trust us. But in order for them to have trust, confidence, and loyalty to us, we have to start these things from us. In other words, we need to trust first our customers before we wish them to trust us back. Just like babies, be loyal to your customers, who are the source of your sales or revenue. Show your loyalty by being dedicated to them.
5. Have a strong sense of feeling.
New born babies have poor eyesight. However, they have a strong sense of hearing. They also have a strong sense of feeling that they could sense the emotions of their moms even when they are still in their womb.
Sense of feeling is vital when we are building good relationship with our employees or with our customers. We need to be compassionate so that we may not only hear what people are saying, but also understand what they are feeling.
We cannot understand the people in our workplace by simple asking them, nor discover what our customer really need by simply giving them questionnaires. We need to connect emotionally with them because apparently… we are human beings. We are people who have complex qualities and characteristics. That is why we need to talk not only through the mouth or eyes, but also through our hearts.
6. Keep in touch, literally.
Babies love to hug. They love to see people personally rather than hear them in the telephone or see them in the monitor. So what important lesson can we learn from them? Well, in this world where technology, Internet and social media have risen. More business owners and marketers are already relying heavily in virtual communication rather than in personal connection. But we don’t need to rely too much on the online world. Small business owners and marketers have to give importance on the human touch rather than on the virtual touch.
If your clients are just within your reach or if they are just living within your city, you may visit their place or meet them personally. This will create closer relationship and will make your online communication more dynamic. Remember that you can be more confident in communicating people online whom you have already met personally than those whom you have not met yet.
7. Be curious.
A baby’s brain has a lot to fill. That is why they are curious at almost everything. They are imaginative and adventurous in their own. So what business tip can we learn from this? Simply, we should not stop learning and discovering new things. We should know how to cleanse our mind when we feel it is already fully loaded. Take note that we cannot learn new things and new wisdom if we will not clear our mind. Thus, we should always admit that we don’t know everything. Small business owners and entrepreneurs should not stop from listening to their mentors, from reading business books and articles, and from experimenting new products to grow their businesses.
Final thoughts
There are many other important lessons that we can learn from the babies aside from what we’ve discussed above. The lessons they give us can be applied, not only in our business, but also in our entire life. For example, babies want to have a good night’s sleep. Entrepreneurs should also learn how to achieve a good night’s sleep by conforming to ethics and maintaining that their conscience is clean. Another important thing is that babies will prefer love from their parents instead of a million dollar cash. In other words, they know how to choose the most important things in this world like love… instead of choosing things that perish like money.
I hope you’ve learned valuable lessons in business and in life from the babies.
