How to become rich? The poor always ask these questions to themselves. I grew up in the Philippines, where poverty is a major problem. The people in this country are already enjoying democracy, but still most Filipinos are not living in financial freedom. Access to higher education, health care and other government grants to its citizens are not that universal. That is why it becomes a more individual challenge to achieve wealth, rather than a national feat. More Filipinos travel to work abroad and serve the foreigners to become rich, instead of hoping to attain riches here in the Philippines. Though, I still want to stand my feet in this native land and serve the people of this country, while doing everything to be rich in the Philippines. I’m glad that through this blog, I am now earning dollars while serving the Filipinos.
Becoming rich is actually a matter beyond the financial world. It is a more personal and spiritual thing. What makes someone really rich is not money, but the principles and virtues behind that money. We cannot just aim to become rich, but we must aim to become truly rich. A truly rich person is one that has enduring wealth instead of temporary riches. He doesn’t only prosper in terms of business, finance and economy, but also in life as a whole. And when it becomes to answering the question on how to become truly rich, I confidently go to the powerful words of the Bible, which are inspired by God. The following verses from the Holy Scriptures will guide you to the real treasure of wealth.
1. Be faithful
“The LORD makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up.” – 1 Samuel 2:7
“The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.” – Proverbs 10:22
“A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.” – Proverbs 28:20
2. Be diligent
“He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” – Proverbs 10:4
3. Have self-control
“He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.” – Proverbs 21:17
4. Be wise
“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor.” -Proverbs 3:13-16
5. Be righteous
“He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.” – Proverbs 11:28
“ As a partridge that broods but does not hatch, So is he who gets riches, but not by right; It will leave him in the midst of his days, And at his end he will be a fool.” – Jeremiah 17:11
6. Be knowledgeable
“By knowledge the rooms are filled, with all precious and pleasant riches.” – Proverbs 24:4
7. Maintain integrity
“Better is the poor who walks in his integrity, Than one perverse in his ways, though he be rich.” – Proverbs 28:6
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold. – Proverbs 22:1
8. Be humble
“Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.- Psalm 62:10
“Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” – 1 Timothy 6:17
9. Be spiritual
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. “- 1 Timothy 6:10
“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.” -1 Timothy 6:9
“For riches are not forever, Nor does a crown endure to all generations.” – Proverbs 27:24
“They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.’ – Revelation 18:19
10. Be not worried
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. – Matthew 6:31-33
Becoming rich is simple, but it’s not easy. Just like these simple words from the Bible, they are short, yet they are hard to follow. But life is a series of practice. That is why if you want to understand and justify the words above, you’ve got to practice them… and live with them.
