In one of our earlier posts, we have published the top 40 blogs in the Philippines based on the February 2012 Alexa Ranking. Our aim was to inspire Filipino bloggers and challenge them in bringing their blogs to the top not only in the Philippines, but also in the world. The post was a success, with a number of bloggers sharing their inspiring thoughts about the list in our blog post and in the social networking site like Facebook where I shared and promoted it. I, myself, have also learned a lot from hand picking and observing those top blogs. Now, my curiosity has pushed me to exploring not only the top Philippine blogs, but also to knowing the top Philippine websites our country can offer. Consequently, I came up with the list of the top 50 websites in the Philippines according to the February 2012 Alexa Ranking.
Who’s on the top?
The list is topped by Sulit.com.ph, an online classified ads and “buy and sell” website in the Philippines. At number 2 and 3 positions are giant news sites Inquirer.net and ABS-CBNnews.com, respectively. Cebu Pacific Airlines proves that their website is also one of the most visited in the country at number 4. While Unionbank Philippines shows that their homepage is the busiest among the online banking portal for Filipinos. Among the top 50, three blogs that were recently included in out top blog list made it to the list. They are iStorya.net (news and entertainment blog), Yugatech (technology blog), and PinoyMoneyTalk (money and investing blog).
How we ranked them
The list is based on the top 500 websites in the Philippines listed by Alexa Ranking as of February 15, 2012. Alexa’s top 500 sites in the Philippines include the world’s most visited websites by Filipinos. It includes global websites, such as Facebook, Google.com.ph, Google.com, Yahoo.com and Youtube.com (ranked in that order from top 1 to 5). To come up with our list, we have manually picked only the websites that are based in the Philippines. We also exclude the following websites:
1. dotPh websites that only serve as domain extensions of foreign websites (e.g., Google.com.ph, eBay.ph, Olx.com.ph)
2. Websites or domains that are owned and or registered under the name of a non-resident foreign individual or entity
3. Websites that violate copyright and other laws
4. Websites that promote links to #3
5. Websites that promote sex, violence, immorality, and discrimination

So what have you learned from the list? I observed that community websites have the big potentials for success. This is perhaps one of the keys to success of Sulit. Its contents are actually provided and contributed by its active users and members. It has built a community large enough to bring it to the top. Remember that this is also one of Facebook’s secrets to success, and Facebook is the no.1 website that is visited by Filipinos if we will include the global websites in the ranking. If you are planning to build a successful website, you can check them out to learn how they made it to the top. This is only our initial list for the year 2012. We will update it after six months to see how they will perform after that period. Furthermore, remember that they are only ranked according to Alexa. There are still other important factors that determine the success of a website, such as its profitability, integrity, and helpfulness to people.
The list is manually picked from Alexa’s top 500 websites in the Philippines that includes foreign websites. We hope to see more Pinoy websites in the ranking in our next update. Also, there might be other websites that we’ve missed to include in the list. If you think we have missed something, please don’t hesitate to share it to us by making a comment below.
