The Super Bowl is one of the biggest Sports events which draw hundreds of millions of audience not only in America, but also in the world. Although it features a National Football League (NFL) championship game where American football fans are eagerly anticipating, it is also one of the greatest days where companies and consumers met through the yearly show-off of the former’s Super Bowl commercials. This year, companies had to spend an average of $3.5 million dollar to put their ads for 30 seconds in front of thousands who will watch the big game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and millions of people who will watch the game on NBC TV, not to mention the people who are also tuning via the Internet. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. EST, Sunday, February 5, 2012.
Unlike the previous years, several advertisers have already released their ads to the public before the big game. Others have only released teasers to surprise the audience during the game. The released commercials are already circulating on the social media, especially in the video sharing site YouTube. Some of them have already reached millions of views as of today. We have compiled a list of those ads in our previous posts to give our readers a preview and let them choose their favorite commercials. Check out our part 1 and part 2 lists. Although we can’t still determine which among them are the best ads since the other brands have not yet released their full commercials, the following are so far our top Super Bowl commercial of 2012.
Budweiser – “Flash Fans”
Budweiser is known for surprising us with their best commercials. And this year, they are giving us an inspiring and uplifting commercial. If you haven’t watched the ad yet, prepare for goose bumps. The video was uploaded on Youtube on February 1, and it already went viral with over 1.3 million views as of the date of this post. The ad features two Canadian amateur league hockey teams surprised by a flash mob of cheering fans that fill the empty hockey arena. Budweiser gives a big surprise to the players by giving them the experience of how it is to play in a big game where fans, cheerleaders, mascots, professional announcers and a big screen, where slow mo plays, are around them.
2012 Kia Optima – ”A Dream Car. For Real Life.”
This commercial will rock your world. The commercial is star-studded video featuring Victoria’s Secret® model Adriana Lima, martial arts legend Chuck Liddell, bull rider Judd Leffew on a rhinoceros, and heavy metal band Motley Crue. The ad draws positive reviews from the majority of viewers. The video starts when a sandman tips dream magic over a sleeping couple. The woman had her sweet dream. But the man, who was accidentally poured over with too much dream magic, got his extreme dream. The incredible dream centered on the new 2012 Kia Optima with the rest of the stars.
Volkswagen – “The Dog Strikes Back”
How would you react when you see a fat dog do his workout and reduce his diet to lose some weight? The first part of the commercial features an overweight dog named Bolt who was inspired to get in shape by the all-new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. See him workout on the thread mill, gym ball, dumbbells, swimming and avoids a bad diet. The last part of the ad shows a surprise appearance of an intergalactic superstar. If you have seen Volkswagen’s 2011 Game Day commercial, which became a big hit last year, you can appreciate the video more. Volkswagen has also released a teaser commercial ad in Youtube titled “the Bark Side” featuring a canine chorus barking a familiar tune. The video went viral with more than 11.8 million views as of this time.
Coca-Cola – “The Catch” – Starring NY Bear
Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl’s series of commercials this year feature animated polar bears. What makes me like these ads is the fact that they understand their target audience, that is, the American Football fanatics. The video below features NY Bear who tries to catch a bottle of Coke in a football game fashion. You can also check the other videos of Coke’s commercials here.
Toyota Camry – “It’s Reinvented”
When it comes to making a message planted well in the memories of its audience, I think Toyota has done a great job sending their tagline “reinvented” to the people who watched the Camry commercial. This video makes the imagination of its audience goes wild with the human couch, crime-fighting plant, doughy curtains, weight loss rain and the other bizarre things in the commercial. If you will watch this video, you will surely remember the word “reinvented” and will have a hard time getting over it. It will teach marketers how uniqueness works when it comes to promoting a brand or a product.
MetLife – “Everyone” (Updated)
We have added MetLife’s “Everyone” Super Bowl commercial as one of our top choices. The video started with Charlie Brown. And to the audience surprise, a lot of friendly classic cartoon faces that includes Scooby-Doo, Grape Ape, Mr. Magoo, Richie Rich, the Jetsons, Casper, Fat Albert, Marvin the Martian, He Man, Voltron, and many more join forces in a reunion where people can surely feel nostalgic. When I saw the video, I felt the nostalgia of my childhood cartoons. I also have to view the video a lot of times, to recognize all of the characters. I know you will too. This is a clever idea by MetLife to make their audience view the video not only twice, but many times.

I liked the “Happy Grad” car commercial. That had a great twist at the end and was very creative. Also liked Matthew Broderick, in another car commercial, all grown up and reprising his role as Ferris Bueller. Funny how I enjoyed the commercials but can’t remember what cars they were advertising.
