After publishing our first weekly business tip which talks about “not quitting”, I’m now sharing the first of our weekly management tips, which titled “the Solar System”. Good management is vital to good business. Likewise, to be a successful businessman or entrepreneur, one must also become a successful manager. Business management involves managing your assets, especially the most important assets – your employees. But managing and motivating people aren’t easy tasks, and since motivating or leading them is the heart of management, this job can be as hard as managing your own heart. Now, what can we learn about the Solar System in regard to management success?
How the Sun manages the planets
The sun is the center and the leader of our Solar System. It uses its great power (gravitational force) to attract and manage the planets to revolve around it. But though the planets were forced to be in revolution with the sun, the sun still gives the planets the freedom to rotate in their own axes. The sun leads the planets, and the planets lead their own satellites. Thus, we, people on Earth, can experience a year, while experiencing day and night. It’s an intelligent design, isn’t it?
The principles and lessons behind
Like the Sun, managers should use their power and authority to govern their subordinates. However, they must not abuse those powers to rule even the private lives of their employees. Managers should take care of the work-life balance of their people.
Employees’ lives should not just revolve in the workplace and with all the office matters, but they should also rotate in their own personal lives (family, home, friends, spiritual relationships, etc.,). Furthermore, top management should also delegate powers to middle managers to manage their own subordinates, without inappropriate interference.
Leaders, employers and managers should not just think of themselves as the center of their organization, but they must understand that they must also maintain several centers within their people. This is to promote employee empowerment.
They must develop their people to be able to act on their own. Just like the Solar System, though the sun is its center, the planets also maintain their own centers – this is what we called axis. Through it, our Earth can manage its own moon. It has also an independent energy and gravity, which create an independent axis where it rotates itself.
Final thoughts
The Solar System is an intelligent design, so as the Sun as an intelligent administrator of that system. This system can exist for millions or billions of years. If you want to become a successful manager and have a successful organization, you should learn from the Sun. We should learn how to use our power the proper way. We should know how to not make our people too hot or too cold. Finally, we should realize how to lead them, while giving them the opportunity to lead themselves and lead the others.
